We’ve all been there. We’re in desperate need of a mood boost, so we go to the cupboard for a bar of silky smooth chocolate. Our worries melt away and we experience pure bliss…until the bar is finished and we’re left with an empty wrapper.
We often pick certain foods to enhance our experience, especially on Valentine’s Day, a time for love and romance. We might be attracted to the heart-shaped strawberry or to the warm, elated feelings that come with a glass of wine. Chocolate is a great mood booster, bringing us a dose of serotonin to make us feel stable, happy and calm. It’s a great example of our mood influencing our food and food influencing our mood – we want to feel better, so we choose to eat chocolate, which gives us the lift we were looking for.
The Celebration Of Chocolate
You don’t need a partner to treat yourself, especially in February! This is the National Celebration of Chocolate Month, an unofficial holiday to learn about and get creative with delicious chocolate flavours. It’s technically an American celebration, but we won’t tell anyone if you want to celebrate. It’s the perfect time to host bake-offs, attend festivals and host a wild themed party!
That can be quite a lot of effort, even for the most ardent chocolate lover. Why not turn convention on its head and go out just for dessert, or order your pudding before your main course? Valentine’s Day is a time to treat yourself, with millions heading out to expensive, elaborate restaurants. However, tiny portions of strange gourmet food isn’t for everyone. The starter is a plate of crisp oysters, served in a Bloody Mary ketchup, before a main course of Côte de Boeuf, a meal of juicy rib steak with roast vine tomatoes, triple-cooked chips and béarnaise sauce. Delicious! Where would we be without a succulent steak for an intimate dinner?
Finally, you want to treat yourself to an epic dessert. Chocolate is the obvious choice for Valentine’s Day – it’s been associated with love since the Victorian times, where wealthy people wooed each other with these gorgeous gifts, including the iconic heart-shaped boxes of Cadbury’s chocolate. Our specials board features a melt-in-your-mouth caramel and chocolate tart, but if you’re looking for something a little different, try sharing our churros and mixed fruits with chocolate dipping sauce! If you’ve already indulged in far too much chocolate, you can savour a light lemon and passionfruit tart.
