Vegan For A Month

Once, veganism seemed crazy. No meat? No fish? No cheese, milk or eggs? How could you possibly survive? The people asking these questions would be amazed to see how the number of vegans has skyrocketed, with over hundreds of thousands going vegan for a month for the Veganuary pledge. We recognise the future when we see it, which is why we’re laying our tables with vegetarian and plant-based options, serving fantastic dishes that will have you scraping the plates.

Not Just A Trend

Going vegan was never just a fad. Veganuary leapt onto the scene in 2014, the brain-child of a couple who wanted to raise the profile of the plant-based diet. Instead of fading away, like most trends, the most recent Veganuary recorded more than 600,000 participants, with a massive percentage continuing even after the end of January.

If it was just a dare or a New Year’s Resolution, the trend would have quickly disappeared. However, climate change, health benefits and the animal rights movement are all fuelling the vegan diet, which is adopted by more and more people every day. It’s said to reduce your carbon footprint by 73%, save incredible amounts of water, preserve carbon dioxide and prevent deforestation. It’s no wonder people are flocking to veganism, while a fruit and veg-centred diet also offers substantial health benefits. Then there are millions of animal rights enthusiasts, living out their principles through what they eat.

Does any of this resonate with you? Or maybe you just love to start the year with a challenge and can’t wait to go vegan for a month!

Vegan Pub-Goers

Gone are the days when vegans travelled to far-flung health shops to do their weekly shopping. Now you can stroll down the free-from aisle at the supermarket. You can even head to the pub, sure of a tasty vegan meal.

Drop by The Four Penny Pub and indulge in a Moving Mountains burger, complete with homemade chilli and vegan cheese. If you’re visiting for brunch, we can dish up a Full English Breakfast without a trace of animal product, or classics like avocado on sourdough toast. You might feel wary of Sunday lunch, the home of roast meats, but we’ve got you covered with a mixed nut, herb and vegetable roast.

Whether you’re a lifelong vegan or going vegan for a month, we’ve got a delectable selection of glorious plant-based meals, as well as new recipes throughout the month of January.

Going Vegan For A Month

It can seem quite a daunting task, but with the right recipes and tasty ingredients, you can go vegan for a month without too much hassle. Take this sweet potato and bean chilli. You don’t have to be a chef to try this out at home!

  1. Heat some olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat and toss in a chopped onion, garlic, carrot, celery and a Scotch bonnet chilli (if you’re feeling adventurous). Cook for five minutes and then sprinkle in some spices, such as cumin, coriander, smoked paprika and chilli powder.
  2. Cook for one more minute before adding a chopped sweet potato, a tin of chopped tomatoes, one vegetable stock pot and 350ml of water, before simmering for 10 minutes.
  3. Add two cans of beans (kidney, cannellini, whatever you prefer) and cook until they and the potato are soft.
  4. Serve and enjoy!

There you have it! If every meal is like this, you can relish going vegan for a month!
