The Story Behind St Patrick’s Day
St Patrick’s Day celebrates Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who lived during the 5th century. Born in Roman Britain, Patrick was captured by Irish raiders as a teenager and taken to Ireland as a slave. After several years he escaped and returned home, but later felt called to return to Ireland as a Christian missionary.
Patrick spent much of his life travelling across Ireland teaching Christianity and establishing churches. According to tradition, he used the three-leaf shamrock to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity – the Father, Son and Holy Spirit – which is why the shamrock remains such a strong symbol of Ireland today.
The date of 17 March is believed to mark the anniversary of his death around the year 461 AD. Over time, the day became a religious feast in Ireland, honouring Patrick’s life and his influence on Irish culture.
