The modern version of the holiday is often credited to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who was inspired to create a day to honour fathers after hearing a sermon about Mother’s Day in 1909. Her own father, a Civil War veteran, had raised Sonora and her siblings alone after their mother passed away. Thanks to her efforts, the first official Father’s Day was celebrated in 1910. Over time, the tradition spread across the globe and has since become a widely recognised day of appreciation.

Father’s Day offers an opportunity for people to show their gratitude in many different ways.
